a letter from our founder

Since founding Austec Business Transitions, LLC in 2015, Austec has continued to focus on innovative ways to help business owners prepare to transition or sell their companies.  One of the most successful strategies has been to discover and ask great questions as a key factor in ensuring the sale of your business is not only financially rewarding but also personally fulfilling.

When I founded the company in 2015, the concept of exit planning (preparing to sell a company or transition it to a family member) was not as prevalent as it is today.  Now, everywhere you look, attorneys, accountants, financial advisors, insurance agents, etc., offer some form of exit planning for business owners.  While this is certainly encouraging, it can also be challenging for business owners to determine whom or what to turn to for this knowledge.

Along with all professionals in this space, we are tasked with asking, “What makes a financially rewarding but also personally fulfilling sale for business owners?” What initially prompted me to pursue this question was the result of numerous conversations with other professionals, including M&A specialists, attorneys, consultants, and accountants, that revealed the horror stories of successful, respected business owners getting the short end of the stick.

Austec does not profess to have all the answers.  However, we have found that great questions built from a fascinating mix of curiosity, critical thinking, and a persistent, genuine desire to understand have led to tremendous advantages for business owners.

Curiosity fosters a natural sense of wonder and fascination with the unknown, accompanied by a deep-seated desire to learn and explore.  Critical thinking requires paying close attention to details, noticing patterns, and identifying inconsistencies that lead to breaking down complex ideas into smaller parts, examining different perspectives, and evaluating evidence.

Wrapped in a persistent desire to understand by putting oneself in others’ shoes, considering different viewpoints, and seeking to understand their experiences with open-mindedness and a bit of humility, produces better questions and answers that create better plans and deliver better, financially and personally fulfilling results.
